Abstract:

Nowadays, structured and freeform surfaces are widely used in various high-value-added-products such as precision moulds, CCD camera lenses, 3D virtual reality headset, etc. Although significant progress has been made in the development of various precision metrology and measuring instruments for structured and freeform surfaces, most of them focus on traditional off-line measurement processes. With the growing demand for improving the accuracy and efficiency of the precision manufacturing of structured and freeform surfaces, on-machine metrology is indispensable to maintain the position of the workpiece for further compensation of the machining errors of the workpiece. Although multi-sensor data fusion is emerging in the field of image processing, robotics, and sensor network, there is still a lack of methodology to govern the measurement process to realize automatic and intelligent measurement of complex surfaces with traceability on multi-sensor instruments, which hinders the future development and application of these surfaces.

This presentation aims to present the development of on-machine metrology systems for in-situ measurement of structured and freeform surfaces. Two case studies of the development of on-machine metrology systems for precision manufacture of structured and freeform surfaces are also discussed. To achieve intelligent surface metrology, a Gaussian process based data modelling and data fusion (GP-DMF) method is also presented. The proposed GP-DMF) method is technically feasibility to be used to enhance the measurement ability for multisensor CMMs.
