Dr Xin Dong is an associate Professor in Engineering Design for Manufacturing and deputy director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology at University of Nottingham. His research interests are continuum robots for inspection and repair in challenging environments, and walking/crawling robots for multimodal locomotion. He received the Ph.D. degree from University of Nottingham in 2015, which was funded by Dorothy Hodgkin scholarship. Since appointed as academic staff in 2017, he has been participating several projects funded by EPSRC, Innovate UK and industry as principle and chief investigators. In 2018, he led one project developed the world's first snake robot for repairing coating in aero-engines. In the last five years, he has published more than 30 papers in top academic journals on robotic design and modelling. Xin has filed 12 international patents. He is well recognised for his innovation on the research of robotics, and he is a reviewer for several top robotic journals. Dr Dong is a Research Affiliate of the Int. Academy of Production EngineeringCIRP and the deputy chairman of the International Federation for the Promotion of UK.

讲座简介:

Industrial systems on land, air and sea contain safety-critical assemblies, such as engines, fuel tanks and pipelines, requiring periodically inspection to detect issues early, before expensive and unscheduled repairs and/or removal of these systems from service. However, inspection and repair in the confined equipment require access to the spaces where complex components and parts are crammed. Therefore, the nature of these confined environments makes the in-situ inspection and repair operations inside such workspaces extremely difficult.

As a popular research field, snake/continuum robots have been developed for several decades, especially for minimally invasive surgery.  Recently, a few academic research results have been successfully turned into commercial products. This presentation will present the research and recent advancements of snake/continuum robots for completely new applications, which are used for the healthcareservice of industrial systems. A brief review of the evolution of snake robots will be presented first, followed by the research and challenges of several applications of these robotic systems in the industry, including aerospace, nuclear and oil and gas.
